When it comes to allocating data, most users tend to use HCPM, which begs the question: Is this always the right tool for the job? The short answer is no. Although we have been told that allocations can be handled in HPCM, there are most certainly situations when Planning and Essbase can provide the upper hand when creating an allocation engine.

So how do you know when Planning and Essbase are the right tools for the job?

You’ll want to begin by identifying when an allocation can be done within Planning and Essbase. That’s the simple part. To achieve success, you start with effective designs to illustrate allocations from both a technical and functional perspective; this includes the allocation metadata design. Next you’ll want to determine what are the necessary dimensions and members when setting up your own allocations application—e.g., when to use UDA or alternate hierarchies when designing your solution. Then you want to take a look at workflow and timing to make sure you’ve covered effectively managing competing demands for unallocated and allocated consolidated results. You’ll need to design effective rules and templates for your allocations. And finally, you have to understand the allocation testing cycle, and how it may differ from a traditional planning project.

To allocate perchance to succeed in planning: ay, there’s the rub.

Join me on Friday, September 11 at 10 a.m. PST/1p.m. EST and answer decide, “Whether ’tis nobler to suffer the slings and arrow of outrageous misfortune in HPCM, or to take up allocations in Planning?” And to help you, not only will I walk you through the decision making process, I’ll also talk about how you can design an effective allocations solution that has excellent auditability and flexibility. And I’ll set the stage with an understanding of everything from efficient ways to set up your hierarchies to common pitfalls, leaving you in allocation bliss.
