Creating the Sample Planning application with Oracle EPM 11.1.2.3

In this blog post we’re going to look at an easy way to create a sample Planning application with Oracle EPM v11.1.2.3.

Environment details/requirements:

  • Oracle EPM 11.1.2.3 functional environment on Windows 2008 R2 servers with Foundation, Essbase, Planning, Calculation Manager, and Essbase Administration Services components
  • Oracle 11gR2 used for the relational database instance(host=adams7, SID=ORCL)

Product breakdown by server for example below:

  • Foundation(Workspace, Shared Services, Calculation Manager), EAS → Adams1
  • Planning → Adams3
  • Essbase → Adams5
  • Oracle 11gR2 RDMBS → Adams7

Create a Planning Application Group

Create a Test Application

  • Navigate to http://adams1:19000/workspace/index.jsp in Internet Explorer
  • Enter username and password
    • Username: admin
    • Password: see system admin
  • Click Logon
  • Select Navigate > Administer > Shared Services Console sharedservicesconsole
  • Create a new Application Group: Planning
  • Logoff of Shared Services

Configure Planning Datasource

Configure Planning Datasource for Planning PLANSAMP application

  • Login to Workspace (http://adams1:19000/workspace/index.jsp ) as admin Creating the Sample Planning application with Oracle EPM 2
  • Navigate to Navigate > Administer > Planning Administration Creating the Sample Planning application with Oracle EPM 3
  • Click Manage Data Source
  • Select Actions → Create Creating the Sample Planning application with Oracle EPM 4
  • Enter the Datasource information
    • Name: PLANSAMP
    • Description: DS for Sample Planning application
  • Select Oracle as the database
  • Enter the Relational Database server information
    • Database: Oracle
    • Server: adams7
    • Port: 1521
    • SID or Service Name: ORCL
    • User Name: PLANSAMP
    • Password: see system admin
  • Enter the Essbase server information
    • Server: adams5
    • User: admin
    • Password: see system admin
  • Validate RDBMS and Essbase connections are successful
  • Click Save

Create Planning Sample Application

Create a Sample Application

  • Login to Workspace (http://adams1:19000/workspace/index.jsp ) as admin Creating the Sample Planning application with Oracle EPM 5
  • Navigate to Navigate > Administer > Planning Administration Creating the Sample Planning application with Oracle EPM 6
  • Select Manage Applications
  • Select Actions → Create Creating the Sample Planning application with Oracle EPM 7
  • Click Create Application
    • DataSource: PLANSAMP
    • Application: PLANSAMP
    • Description: Sample Planning application
    • Application Type: Sample
    • Shared Services Project: Planning Creating the Sample Planning application with Oracle EPM 8
    • Select Create

  • Click OK to get the message, Application created Successfully10
  • Open the application via WorkspaceCreating the Sample Planning application with Oracle EPM 11
  • Select Administration > Application > Manage ApplicationsCreating the Sample Planning application with Oracle EPM 12
  • Highlight the PlanSamp application and select Action > InitializationCreating-the-Sample-Planning-application-with-Oracle-EPM-1213
  • Select Initialize and verify it completes successfully15
  • Select Administration > Application > Create DatabaseCreating the Sample Planning application with Oracle EPM 16

  • Extract the SampleApp_data.txt sample Planning data file on the Planning server from E:\Oracle\Middleware\EPMSystem11R1\products\Planning\bin\sampleapp\SampleApp_data.zipCreating the Sample Planning application with Oracle EPM 21
  • Copy the SampleApp_data.txt file to the Essbase server to the following directory –
    E:\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\Essbase1\EssbaseServer\essbaseserver1\app\PLANSAMP\ConsolCreating-the-Sample-Planning-application-with-Oracle-EPM-22
  • Launch the Essbase Administration Services Console and login the the EAS Server instance to access the EssbaseServer instance Creating the Sample Planning application with Oracle EPM 26
  • Right-click and select Load Data for the PlanSamp > Consol databaseCreating the Sample Planning application with Oracle EPM 27
  • Select the PlanningApp_data.txt file(will default to the folder location of the data file)Creating the Sample Planning application with Oracle EPM 28
  • Select OK and verify the data load completes successfullyCreating the Sample Planning application with Oracle EPM 29
  • Open one of the sample Web Forms in the PLANSAMP Planning application and verify data is present

  1. With Planning 11.1.2.3.500 the sample application is even easier to set up and is much improved in many ways (includes FR reports and FDMEE configuration etc). John Goodwin has written a blog post about this:
